Arthur Wardle was born in London. He was a self taught artist who specialized in animal paintings and sporting subjects. Wardle also made a large number of superb studies of animals, usually in chalks on colored paper. His paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street. Many of his paintings were reproduced on cigarette packages, postcards, calendars and boxes of chocolates. Wardle was one of the finest late Victorian painters of dogs, often combined with a beautiful woman.
